Not sure about you, but there is nothing that gets me more excited to roll out of bed in the morning than COFFEE! The sweet aroma filling the house, the first few sips of heavenly goodness, the way it seemingly starts my day off on the right foot and instantly makes me happy… thank God for coffee!
I realize many people don’t look at coffee as being a “health drink” based on arguments that it could have potential negative qualities, but you should also know coffee is loaded with antioxidants, nutrients, and many other healthy compounds that greatly benefit your body.
The truth is, it is us who makes our coffee unhealthy. Sugars, creamers, and artificial sweeteners are terrible and pretty much destroy any healthy qualities coffee may have in the first place. So what is a girl who loves sweet coffee to do?
Forever I have longed to drink black coffee and be satisfied (you should know you are blessed if you can do this) but I am like most in sense that I LOVE my coffee sweet. For years I have searched for healthier options, only to conclude that most of them steal my coffee joy. FINALLY I found some ways to make coffee both healthy and enjoyable and had to share!
Here are my tips:
FOR CREAMER– For those of you who like creamy coffee, cans of organic coconut milk have that cream factor and possess incredibly healthy saturated fats that are known to boost your metabolism and your immune system. I actually really enjoy coconut milk from the carton as well, which is a little more watery, but has less fat than the cans. I have been told to try almond milk in the past and it was TERRIBLE. Almond milk watered down my coffee and I couldn’t even finish the cup. YUCK. Coconut milk by FAR is the most delicious healthy creamer! Not to mention it is dairy free and full of fiber and has many other health benefits.
FOR SWEETENER– There are a few different healthier options for sweeteners I found taste really good. Obviously if you can go without any sweetener at all that is best, but if you can not, try a small amount of maple syrup, honey, stevia, or coconut palm sugar. Maple syrup is packed with antioxidants, promotes a healthy heart, boosts your immune system and actually has less calories than honey. Some people like the taste of raw honey better, which also has a ton of healthy benefits just a little more calories than maple syrup. Both obviously should be used sparingly. I have recently been using organic coconut palm sugar for cooking and I found that mixing it with a pinch of stevia in my coffee is also wonderful. This has been my go to way of sweetening the past few weeks. Coconut sugar is healthier than refined table sugar because it maintains more nutrients and has a lower glycemic index than the overly processed poison we consume with refined sugar. Still should be used in moderation, because calories are still high, but definitely better than the other stuff!
EXTRA FLAVOR– Do you like artificial vanilla coffee sweeteners? Add a little vanilla extract to get that vanilla flavor. You can also add almond extract, peppermint extract, or any other kind you like! I have also been adding cinnamon to my coffee because I love the flavor and it adds even more healthy antioxidants. Cinnamon can also help control blood sugar. Want some mocha chocolate coffee? Add some raw cocoa powder (non-sweetened) which also has a ton of health benefits.
So there you have it! These are my more recent discoveries. PLEASE stop consuming sugar and artificial poison every morning! There are much better and healthier options.
Feel free to comment if you have other healthy ways of sweetening your coffee! 🙂
